Continuing his longstanding involvement in parental alienation advocacy and legal scholarship, Canadian family law attorney Brian Ludmer has announced he will be contributing to a forthcoming book on the subject of parental alienation.

About the Book

The book, which is titled Parental Alienation and the Polarised Child: Understanding One of the Dynamics of Children Resisting Contact, is currently being compiled and is scheduled for release in the Spring of 2027.

The intention behind creating the book is to provide a balanced look at difficult family law cases involving children resisting contact with a parent after separation, as well as the larger, ongoing debate surrounding parental alienation. The strategy behind its multi-author roster is to bring together an internationally recognized group of scholars, legal professionals, psychologists, and social workers capable of approaching these difficult issues from a variety of unique and informed perspectives.

Brian Ludmer’s Contribution

Brian Ludmer has been confirmed as the author of chapter ten, which will be called “Proving a Parental Alienation Case in Court: How to Structure the Proportionate and Necessary Remedy.” With an expected running length of between 7,000 and 10,000 words, the chapter will focus on:

  • How parental alienation cases are evaluated and litigated within the court system
  • Why some legal interventions succeed while others fail
  • Proposing a host of recommendations aimed at improving how courts and professionals deal with parental alienation cases

Speaking about the project, Ludmer noted that “there is an incredible amount of learning to be drawn from 21 years of cases and consultations,” suggesting that the chapter will rely heavily on his firsthand experience dealing with high-conflict custody litigation involving the many forms parental alienation can take.

Additional Contributors

Other chapters of the book are slated to be written by such esteemed professionals as Clinical Psychologist Barbara-Jo Fidler (Canada), Clinical Psychologist Mandy Matthewson (Australia), and Forensic and Clinical Psychologist Gisli Gudjonsson (United Kingdom), among a host of other specialists. The book is being edited by Dr. Denise McCartan (United Kingdom) and Prof. Nicholas Bala (Canada), and it will be printed and distributed by the publishing house Routledge (UK)
