On Wednesday, August 6, 2025, Canadian family law attorney Brian Ludmer appeared as a featured speaker at International Families Alliance’s Legal Perspectives Webinar.

During the free-to-attend online event, Ludmer made a presentation discussing several systemic problems at play in the Canadian family court system that often lead to dysfunction, specifically the challenges posed by false allegations of one parent against another in family law disputes. Among the legal matters discussed were practical strategies for documenting evidence and how to address false accusations.

Joining Brian Ludmer during the webinar was Jake Shen, a criminal defence lawyer based in Ontario and a former police officer. Shen commented on the low threshold for laying charges in cases of alleged domestic assault, emphasizing that in many cases, the criminal investigations are more subjective than the public might think. He then went on to illustrate how careful documentation and a thorough understanding of witness credibility can help people protect themselves in family and criminal law contexts.

Both speakers shared examples from recent cases they have dealt with, including instances where false allegations led to parental restrictions, the use of affidavits, and perjury issues. Details concerning the identities of those involved were omitted for the sake of preserving their anonymity.
